 Report of The Second CJCC Festival

From 21st to 25th of February, 2007, Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Center (CJCC) celebrated the 2nd CJCC Festival under the slogan of “A week of exploring Cambodian and Japanese Culture” at CJCC building. During this special week many culture events, seminars, many kind of exhibitions were conducted through the cooperation and assistance from Embassy of Japan, JICA, Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) and Japanese NGOs.


Seminar on "Japanese Approaches to Nature, Culture and Development ---Commonalities between Japan and Cambodia---" was held on the 21st February 2007.
Distinguished lecturer, Dr. Yoshinori YASUDA, provided an opening lecture on "Japanese Views on Nature, Culture and Religion and its Commonalities with Cambodia", followed by Dr. Hirohisa KOHAMA's lecture on "Japanese Development Experiences for Cambodia's Process towards Market Economy".
Finally, a round-table discussion on "Cambodian Traditional Society and Culture, Implication for Development" were held with 5 distinguished panelists (H.E. Ambassador, Fumiaki TAKAHASHI, Dr. Sorn Samnang, Dr. Ros Chantrabot, Dr. Yoshinori YASUDA, and Dr. Hirohisa KOHAMA).
Seminar on "Discovery of Khmer Traditional Culture from the Prospective of Textiles" by Mr. Kikuo Morimoto.
(21st February 2007)

Mr. Morimoto introduced the history of Khmer textiles and silk, the restoration and revitalization of related industries which the Institute for Khmer Traditional Textiles (IKTT) are committed to, as one of the most typical elements of traditional Cambodian culture. Before the wars, cotton was grown in Cambodian villages and silkworms raised for producing raw silk. A complete self-sustainable system of textile production was build within the village, where everything related to the industry was available: from raw materials for yarns to natural dyes, such as indigo or “Lac” insects, as well as woods for tools and machines.

Seminar: “Secrets behind the Success of the Japanese Company Workplace: 5S & Kaizen - Basic Principles of Japanese Production Management-”

Dr. Sugimura introduced “5S & Kaizen”, which are the secrets behind the successful Japanese company workplace. He also showed pictures of factories before and after implementing “5S & Kaizen” from the viewpoint of manufacturing technology, which is a forte of Japan. Insights into the secrets behind the competitiveness of Japanese production and company success stories through "5S & Kaizen" activities was discussed by Dr. Mitsuji SUGIMURA, President, SUMMIT Lab. Inc

Lecture on Cambodian Culture “Apsara Dance” and “Apsara Dance Performance” by the Royal Ballet Dance Troupe
(22nd, 16:00~18:00, in the Multi-Purpose Hall)

CJCC invited Ms Hitomi YAMANAKA to give a lecture on APSARA dance. She studied Khmer traditional orchestics at the Royal University of Fine Arts of Cambodia. The lecture was conducted in Japanese with Khmer translation.

Following the Lecture on Apsara Dance by Ms. Hitomi YAMANAKA, CJCC presented an authentic APSARA dance show performed by the Royal Ballet Troupe of the Royal University of Fine Art.

Japanese Traditional Dance Show
(23rd, 13:00~14:00, in the Lobby)

The Japanese Traditional Dance, Nihon-Buyo comes from the traditional classic play, Kabuki. Seven Cambodian girls have been trained to perform this dance.



Kamishibai
(23rd, 14:00~15:00 in Seminar Room 4)

Kamishibai are story-telling cards that were very popular in the 1950s and they now experience renewed interest in Japan. Originally they were stories told orally. During the CJCC festival the library performed Kamishibai Theatre, telling Japanese folk and fairy tales to Japanese language learners.

Origami Competition and Exhibition
(23rd, 15:00~15:30, in the Lobby)

CJCC has run more than ten Origami classes so far. Many participants have joined these sessions. It was a chance for participants to compete and show their progress.

The topics were:

1) Jumping frog
2) Crane
3) Dragonfly

Seminar: Conditions for Overseas Students in Japan
(24th, 09:00~10:30 in the Multi-Purpose Hall)

CJCC invited Mr. PUNYAWE CHANTRAKAJORN, a member of staff of JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) from Thailand, who has much experience of studying in Japan, to give a speech on the topic of “Conditions for Overseas Students in Japan”. Through his experiences at a Japanese university and working for many years as JASSO member of staff in the Thai office, he is knowledgeable about the Japanese Scholarship structure and student life in Japan.

Cambodian and Japanese Martial Arts Exhibition
(24th, 12:30~14:00 in the Multi-Purpose Hall)

Many participants enjoyed Japanese culture in a series of Japanese martial arts demonstration. KARATE and AIKIDO was exhibited by Cambodian athletes. Khmer martial arts, Kbach Kun Khmer, was also performed during this session.

Quiz Contest - Inter-College Japanese Language Quiz Game
(24th Sat. 14:00~16:00 in the CJCC’s Garden)

It was a competition for Cambodian students on their knowledge of Japan and Japanese Language. Eight teams (CJCC, RUPP, NUM, RULE etc.) selected their four brightest students to test their brains and become the first champion of this competition. The winner of the contest, students from Royal University of Law and Economic (RULE), received a CD player & free dinners at a Japanese restaurant as their prize.

Japanese Drum Performance and MOCHI TSUKI (Rice Cake Pounding) Demonstration
(24th, 16:30~17:30 in the Garden)

Japanese drum performance by Mekong DAIKO, MOCHI TSUKI (pounding rice cake) demonstration and Japanese rice cake testing. After the performance, we made rice cake and all participants enjoyed tasting with free of charge.

Cambodia and Japanese Traditional Instrument Concert
(24th, 17:30~19:00 in the Multi-Purpose Hall)

The last program on 24th January was an instrumental concert of Khmer and Japanese traditional music. KOTO (a traditional Japanese string instrument with a history of more than 1,000 years) was played by Ms Noriko TSUBOI, and traditional Khmer instruments, Tror Khmer, Tror Sor, Skor, Takhe, Roneath, Khse Diev, Pey Or, Pey Pork, Flute and Chapey was played by Professor Yun Khean and his students from the Royal University of Fine Arts.

Tea Ceremony - Meeting with Khmer Artifacts
(25th, 09:30~11:00 in the Japanese-Style Room)

The Japanese Tea Ceremony is a distinct part of Japanese culture for enjoyment of both taste and the beauty of tea utensils.

This event harmonized Khmer and Japanese culture in one ceremony. Many Cambodians joint and appreciated the Japanese Tea Ceremony with Khmer utensils, in which Japanese green tea was served by the CJCC Tea Ceremony Club members, in the CJCC Japanese-style TATAMI room.

Khmer Traditional Wedding Dress Show
(25th, 11:30~12:00 in the Lobby)

This show introduced traditional Cambodian wedding costumes and their cultural meanings. The costumes was presented by Cambodian student model volunteers with commentary in Khmer and English. It was a chance to see these wonderful and artistic styles of Khmer traditional dress.

Japanese Language Speech Contest
(25th Sun. 14:00~17:00 in the Multi-Purpose Hall)

This contest was the highlight for all Japanese language learners in Cambodia for the past ten years. Only 14 speakers was selected among 72 applicants from around the country.

Ms. Chhong Sota, the winner of the 10th Japanese Language Speech Contest, will enjoy a two-week trip in Japan.

Japanese Film Show

Through the cooperation with Embassy of Japan in Cambodia, CJCC organized 3 series of Japanese films, All About Our House, POPPOYA, and ROBOCON. Around 300 participants most of them are students enjoyed watching these movies.

Free Internet Access Corner
(21st – 25th, 9:00 – 11:30 and 14:00 – 16:30 in the Computer Room)

Enjoy searching and downloading everything for your inquiry; correspondence or chatting with your partner, and getting world information in just a second. Everything is in your finger.  

Over 200 participants were pleased to be apart of our Free Internet Access Corner. Even, for just only 45 minutes, they can get what they want.

Digital Photo Studio
(23rd – 25th, 9:00 – 17:00 in Seminar Room 2)

Imagine where you are if you are dressing YUKATA and appear in the beautiful background of Japanese scenes? Well, without a doubt, You are in JAPAN!!!

Many Cambodian people enjoyed our Digital Photo Studio as they seem to be in Japan, while they are just only in Seminar Room 2 of Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Center.


Sale and Exhibition by NGOs and Japanese Companies

It was a display of activities of NGOs and Japanese companies working in Cambodia, as well as to show their products and accomplishments to the general public.

There were serverall activities besides all the above-mentioned activities, CJCC also arranged exhibition for JICA Activities, JICE/JDS activities, CJCC Activities, Honda Art Exhibition, and Japanese Doll Exhibtion.
